From its inception, the Founders also conceived Phi Beta Sigma as a mechanism to deliver services to the general community. Rather than gaining skills to be utilized exclusively for themselves and their immediate families, they held a deep conviction that they should return their newly acquired skills to the communities from which they had come. This deep conviction was mirrored in the Fraternity’s motto, “Culture For Service and Service For Humanity”.
The brothers of Phi Beta Sigma are the Fraternity’s most valuable resource and strength. They are the primary means by which the Phi Beta Sigma objectives will be achieved. In order to accomplish the Fraternity’s objectives, it is essential that systems are instituted that effectively embody “Culture For Service and Service For Humanity” and promote brotherhood, scholarship and service.
Message from the President
Greetings! My name is Bro. Aaron Washington. I am blessed to serve as the current president for the Alpha Nu Sigma chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Our great chapter was founded in Oakland, CA in 1947, by five dynamic black men. The vision to charter Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. in the Bay Area was spearheaded by Bro. Andrew McCarter. Bro. McCarter's ingenuity has led to an abundance of Sigma men in Northern California whose reach ranges from Sacramento to Fresno.
The focus of our chapter is based upon Brotherhood, Scholarship and Service, the core tenets of our beloved Fraternity. Genuine Brotherhood is the bedrock of our chapter and fraternity. In genuine Brotherhood there develops among men a bond that is intangible but one of the most cherished pillars within our organization. Genuine brotherhood ensures the wellbeing and success of every brother in our chapter. The importance of brotherhood is to empower our chapter brothers, so that they can be a service to the community and fraternity. Our focus on brotherhood, spans formal programs and each brother’s personal wellbeing. Informally, we enjoy signature events like Brotherhood outings, summer cookouts and holiday gatherings with our families, Brotherhood Smoke and Fellowship following meetings and gatherings and much more.
Culture for Service and Service for Humanity is the motto for our dear fraternity. In service to one's fellow man, there is born a unique sense of usefulness and selflessness that enriches all of life. Sigma men worldwide are truly our brothers’ keeper. Alpha Nu Sigma chapter proudly sponsors of our international programs such as youth mentoring through the Sigma Beta Club, the Black Spend Initiative which empowers black entrepreneurship and Project Vote, we believe that all citizens should be involved in the democratic process and we encourage all that are able to vote to exercise their civic duties. We partner with local organizations to help citizens vote, either by registering voters, voter turnout, voter education, helping provide access to the elderly and various community service projects through Oakland and the San Francisco Bay Area.
From the fraternity's inception scholarship has been integral to the ethos of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Our education program developed from the Fraternity’s traditional emphasis on high academic achievement as an ingredient for success.With Scholarship there comes a commitment to academic excellence and lifelong learning.

Bay Area Sigmas, Inc. has a goal of building our resources to support our programmatic efforts and philanthropies. Your support is vital to these efforts.
